In a bid to make Malta’s roads safer and more regulated, on May 19th, 2023, two legal notices came into force, namely the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) and the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Regulations, both making several changes to the country’s traffic rules, including an increase in fines and penalty points for contraveners.
The new, heftier fines are now in effect and are listed below. If you have been served with a ticket or contravention which you feel is unjust or incorrect, you have the right to lodge a petition, which is a formal document in which you explain your case and appeal the ticket received.
You may lodge a petition either online or by sending a letter to the Board of Petitions. If your petition is rejected, you also have the right to contest your case before your Local Tribunal.
